🏆 What You Need to Do Before Competing in an Agility Trial

Getting ready for your first competition is exciting, and a little preparation helps you and your dog feel confident on the day. Before entering a trial, you’ll need to make sure you have:

🐶 1. A Registered Dog
  • Your dog must be registered with Dogs SA (or your state’s ANKC body).

  • Associate Register dogs are welcome — purebred papers aren’t required.

🎓 2. The Required Training Level
  • You and your dog should be confidently completing full courses in class.

  • You should understand basic handling, obstacle rules, and ring etiquette.

  • Your instructor can help you decide when you’re ready

📄 3. A Current Dogs SA Membership

  • Handlers must be financial members to enter ANKC‑sanctioned trials.

🐕‍🦺 4. Your Dog’s Height Measurement

  • Dogs must be officially measured to determine their height category.

  • This is done by ANKC‑approved measurers at designated measuring sessions.

📝 5. An Entry Submitted for the Trial
  • Most clubs use online entry systems (e.g., K9 Entries or Top Dog Entries)

  • Make sure you enter the correct classes for your dog’s level (e.g., Novice, Excellent or Masters).

🎒 6. Trial‑Day Essentials

Bring:

  • Crate or shade

  • Water for your dog

  • Treats and rewards (used outside the ring)

  • Poo bags

  • Dogs Height Card

  • A positive, calm mindset

🤝 7. Understanding Trial Etiquette
  • Walk the course and attend the judges briefing

  • Know where the ring entry and exit points are.

  • Keep your dog under control and give space to others.

  • No toys in the ring.

  • Be ready when your number is called.

  • Have FUN!
